What It's Like: High School

Okay. I'm trying something entirely new! Well, not quite. Today I'll be talking about what it's like to study in High School. That's because a) I'm in high school, and b) It seemed kind of a timely topic to discuss. What It's Like is a new thing that I'm trying out. It's some sort of feature which discusses various topics. All opinions listed are of my own, and no one made me state these online.

1. First day = Chaos.

I don't know about you, but when I first entered our school, it was a disaster. By break time, everyone was berserk. I ended up not buying anything in the school co-op and just sat on my chair inside our room. Also, all those assembly thingies that aimed to orient us about the school. I don't think we were orderly then....?

2. Learning the culture of your school.

Every school has its own principles. Every school has its own culture. Even though you might not seem fit for the shenanigans in your school, trust me. You will blend in almost immediately. That is, if you let the school help you discover yourself.

3. You will change.

Well, it's not exactly change change. More like, getting to know yourself better. Gee, I remember what I looked like when I was still in the 7th Grade. Total. Revamp. Again, it's not about changing yourself, or letting the school and its entities define you. Rather, you can use your school's culture for you to discover yourself even better and think "Oh. This is much more like me." It's for you to "spread your wings" or whatever.

On the other hand..... High school's typically the time in your life where you undergo changes in your body. Puberty. Don't fear, it's completely normal. Just a walk in the park. Maybe not. But keep that in mind.

4. Romance....?

This is in the list, because..... it's true. Most of us develop these deep, sometimes painful feelings called crushes. And that's normal. It's okay for you to like someone. May it be from the same or opposite gender (#LoveWins). Just....... be careful with the choices you make. And prioritize studying.

5. Friends to keep forever.

This may not be the case for some, but in my own experiences, high school is where you meet people whom you'll treasure forever. You'll find out that you share the same interests, thinking, even personalities. You will find those who'll never leave you, those who'll care. And if I were you? I'd never lose them.

6. Stress.

Oh this is the worst. Stress from school work? Emotional stress? Physical stress? Any kind. It will attack you and you will suffer. My advice to you guys is to not pressure yourselves in doing anything. Staying up late to finish homework? Take a break. It's not the end of the world if you don't finish your tasks! Tomorrow is another day. Besides, stressing yourselves isn't healthy. At all.

7. Fights.

Fights. Who'd not be intrigued when there's a cat-fight going on? It's  inappropriately interesting to witness a fight. But be in one? Um. I don't want to remember. Sometimes, fighting can also lead to many types of situations. Such as the next one........

8. Problems. Lots of them.

On a more serious note, high school is a terrifying place. There could be bullies in your school. You could become anxious. You might break under pressure. If anything good can happen, remember that anything bad might occur as well. It isn't easy, sometimes, to get past through them. It's normal though, and many high schoolers experience this as I type.

9. ........And conquering them

I suggest seeking help from others. Talk to them. Tell them your problems. It's better if you do this with your close friends, as mentioned above. Promise, I've experienced this before, and I'm so grateful that I found friends worth telling.

10. ........And partying afterwards.

Right after you defeat your problem? You party. Go outside. Go somewhere with your friends or family. Live a little. It's a way of repaying yourself for sticking it up and facing your fears/problems. Do what you've always wanted to do. Be free.

11. And lastly, that sense of accomplishment.

Passed a test? Accomplishment. Won in a contest? Accomplishment. Finished High School? Accomplishment. You will get that surge of happiness and elation when you achieve something. It gives you a very happy and excited vibe, and you'll obviously infect everyone with your positive aura. You'll probably be inspired for a very, very long time.

Again, all of these are my own opinions. If you think that I missed some points, don't hesitate to leave comments below! Also, tell me if you're interested to see more of these What It's Like posts.

  1. Aw, this post makes me so nostalgic (and old). Haha.. I miss my high school days. There were lots of ups and downs, there were great things and horrible things that happened, but the experience was totally unforgettable. High school is such a big part of my life. For me, it symbolizes hope, dreams, innocence, love, pain, regrets, friendship, accomplishments and betrayal. Bittersweet, yes, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Awesome post, Raffy! :)
